*All the inverters we sell are pure sine wave models. We do not recommend any modified sine wave inverters unless you only plan to power lighting. If you would like a modified sine wave inverter please call or email.*

 What is an inverter?

An inverter is a piece of equipment that converts DC (direct current) electricity into AC (alternating current). DC electricity is typically available from the sun (solar panels), wind (wind turbines) or water (microhydro turbines) and is stored in a battery or bank of batteries. AC electricity is what most people are familiar with. It is what comes from your outlets and light switches in a typical home. AC electricity powers standard appliances and electronics such as your blender and your television. DC electricity can be used for certain applications but most common off the shelf appliances and electronics operate on AC electricity. That is why an inverter is required.

Outback has four styles of inverters: the FX- a sealed unit with a cooling fan; the VFX- a ventilated unit of the FX which increases the power rating; the GTFX- a grid tied sealed unit and the GVFX- a grid tied ventilated unit. Outback power inverters like the FX inverters and VFX inverters are designed for off grid battery applications and include battery chargers and automatic transfer switches that will operate from a generator or grid power. The GTFX inverters and GVFX inverters are grid tie models that will sell power to the grid as well as provide back up electricity during a power outage. They also have battery chargers and automatic transfer switches but are not designed for use with a generator. All Outback inverters have a 120 volt AC output and can be stacked to provide 240 volt output. Should you buy an Outback inverter you will not be disappointed!

The Xantrex XW inverters are off grid models that include battery chargers. They have 120/240 volt output with only one inverter required. 

The Morningstar Sure Sine is a small but reliable 300 watt inverter used for small sensitive loads such as cordless tools or electronics. It does not have a battery charger or transfer switch.

Some inverters like the Sunny Boys or the Xantrex Sun Tie are only grid tie inverters and will not operate during a power outage.
