What is a DC fuse?
A dc fuse is a one time use device used to protect conductors (wires) and equipment from overcurrent. It's
function is similar to a dc breaker but it is not resetable like a breaker. Each solar system should have a
dc fuse mounted as close to the battery bank as possible and a dc breaker for each inverter. The dc
fuse is to prevent catastrophic damage caused by the large inverter cables coming in contact with each other. Most
common fuses are of the AC (alternating current) type such as those used in the fuse panel of your home. DC (direct
current) fuses perform the same function in direct current systems such as the battery in your car or a solar
system. Although dc fuses look similar to ac fuses they are not. AC fuses may not be used on DC systems as
they can fail or cause a fire. DC fuses are rated by amperage (amps) and voltage (volts).
The dc fuses with enclosures listed above are all Class T rated for up to 125 volts dc and are UL
approved. Class T fuses have a high arc interrupt rating and are specially designed to break and smother a
direct current arc when the fuse blows. This opens the circuit to prevent catastrophic battery and battery cable
damage. They are mounted in a polycarbonate enclosure and easily mounted to the battery box using four screws.
These dc fuses are installed easily by stripping the insulation of the conductors (cables), inserting the wire into
to end of the fuse and tightening the set screws (as seen in photos below).
