What is a DC Disconnect/Breaker Panel ?
A DC disconnect is a device such as a breaker used to
disconnect the batteries from a device such as an inverter. It
is usually a breaker but could be as simple as a switch. We use
the term DC disconnect instead of DC breaker panel although
both terms are interchangeable. Each system should have
a DC fuse (on the positive + conductor) mounted as close to the
batteries as possible to protect the main cables from the
batteries to the DC disconnect (DC breaker panel). Secondly,
the system should have a means of disconnecting the
batteries. This is where the DC disconnect is
used. Most DC disconnects manufactured today, as well as the DC
disconnects listed below, are DC breaker panels that have one
or more spaces (slots) for large breakers (125, 175 and 250
amp) and several spaces (slots) for smaller type breakers 1 to
100 amp).
The three styles of DC disconnects we commonly supply and
install are:
|
Outback Flexware DC
Disconnects - The Outback
Flexware products are designed to make
installation of the FX series inverters
professional looking and simple. They are
available in three styles: Flexware 250 series,
Flexware 500 series and Flexware 1000 series.
The 250 series are for use with one inverter
and can be used on the other side of the
inverter as an AC breaker panel. The 500 series
can be used for one or two inverters. The 1000
series is usually used for more than two
inverters, however it can be used for any
number of inverters up to four. None of the
Flexware products include any breakers. They
must be purchased separately.

Xantrex DC175/DC250 DC
Disconnects - The Xantrex DC
disconnects are designed for installation with
the SW series Xantrex inverters but can be used
for almost any inverter. Both models include
one breaker (175 amp or 250 amp) and have
another slot for one more large breaker (using
a breaker mounting kit) making it suitable for
installation of one or two inverters. The
Xantrex DC disconnects also have spaces (slots)
for up to four more of the CD/EA1 style (up to
125 volt DC) breakers as listed on our
DC breaker
page.

Midnite Solar MNDC DC
Disconnects - The newest
additions to our DC disconnects are the
products made by Midnite Solar. They are
excellent alternatives to the DC disconnects
listed above and are compatible with almost all
inverters. They are very compact and simple to
install. Each MNDC includes one large breaker
(100,125,175 or 250 amp) and has slots for up
to five inexpensive din mount 150 volt dc
breakers. They are suitable for only one
inverter systems as they only have space for
one large breaker.
