12 Volt DC 5 Watt MR16 Compact
Florescent Bulb (CFL)
We have been looking
for a 12 Volt 5 watt MR16
style compact florescent bulb for some time
now. We are finally able to offer it to our
customers. The only other website we have found
these for sale is a great site
located in the US. You can go there by clicking
here.
We use these 12
volt DC MR16 compact florescent bulbs
in our off-grid home and have been very
pleased. The most noticeable difference
is the temperature difference between a 20
watt halogen off-the-shelf bulb compared
to the MR16 12 volt DC
CFL. Using an infrared thermal gun we have
measured the temperatures as
follows:
| 20 Watt 12
volt Halogen MR16 |
173oC |
|
5 Watt 12 volt CFL
|
48oC |
As you can see, the halogen bulb is
basically a heater that produces a little
light as a bonus...
while the CFL is a light
that produces a little bit of heat.
Are the 12 volt MR16
Compact Florescent bulbs as bright as a 20 watt
halogen MR16 bulb? No, they are
not, but they are bright enough to read
with or for general room lighting. As with all
CFLs the light is not as intense and takes time
to get used to. These bullbs take a minute or
two to reach their full light output as is the
case with most CFLs. We have taken some
pictures to show you the lighting quality and
comparison with a standard halogen unit.
Note: These bulbs will
operate from any 12 volt DC power source and
are not polarity sensitive. They will not
be damaged by reverse
polarity.
